The Nature of Solid Wood

This is the age of chip core, plastic, and printed finishes that look like wood. Our company is a throwback to a time when there was an integrity of materials that a craftsmen used. We use solid Pennsylvania Black Cherry because of its beautiful grain patterns, its workability and its durability. We do not cut out natural character marks in the wood. Each board has its own beauty marks. We like the character that these natural markings bring to a piece. Occasionally we use plywood when it enhances quality. We use a solid wood core with cherry veneer on both faces. You will find 3/4" plywood used on back panels, end panels and bottom panels. We use 1/4" for our drawer bottoms.
Solid wood grows and shrinks with humidity changes. It takes special knowledge and construction techniques to allow for this movement. For this reason, we finish our furniture not only on the outside but throughout the interior as well. This slows the moisture movement in and out of the wood. We recommend humidifiers in dry climates, or in the North where the heat dries out a home, and air conditioning or dehumidifiers in humid areas.

Our Certified Wood & The Collins Companies

At the Robert Bergelin Company everything starts with quality material. Being in the business for four generations, we like to think toward future generations and what materials will be available to them. For this reason, we have forged an alliance with the Kane Hardwoods division of the Collins Companies. They are the North American leader in sustainable forestry. Their forests have been certified under the strict rules of the Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC logo on a product provides consumers with an assurance that the wood they are use comes from forests managed in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. We have also been certified under the FSC guidelines for a secondary manufacturer and retailer by the SmartWood Certifcation Organization. They are a non-profit arm of the Rainforest Alliance. With their guidance, we track the certified wood in our factory and any piece of furniture with of over 70% certified contendt will have a special tag showing that content. We are honored to be working with such a unique company as the Collins organization. They are a 5th generation family business so we find we share the same values. Their quality of material is second to none. We can sleep at night knowing that with their 100-year cutting rotation, we will have material for many generations to come.
